Did you know May is an important month for your vision? It’s Healthy Vision Month! This month, we encourage everyone to take a proactive approach to their eye health. Healthy eyesight is an essential component of overall wellness and quality of life. At Macleod Optometry, we want to ensure that everyone has access to the information they need to keep their eyes healthy.

What are some tips for maintaining good eye health?

Maintaining good eye health is essential to ensure that you have clear vision and prevent the development of eye diseases. By following the tips discussed below and scheduling regular eye exams with a qualified optometrist, you can help maintain your eye health and enjoy clear vision for years to come.

How often should you undergo eye exams?

Regular eye exams are an essential part of maintaining good eye health. During an eye exam, an optometrist can detect any problems with your eyesight and develop a treatment plan if necessary. Adults should have an eye exam at least once every two years, or more frequently if they have certain health conditions or a family history of eye problems. Children should have their first eye exam at six months of age and then again at age three, before starting school, and at least every two years after that.

How can digital devices affect your eye health and how can you prevent it?

Digital eye strain is a condition caused by prolonged use of digital devices such as computers, smartphones, and tablets. Symptoms of digital eye strain include dry eyes, eye fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, and neck and shoulder pain. Here are some tips to help prevent digital eye strain:

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away.
  • Position your computer screen so that it’s about an arm’s length away and slightly below eye level.
  • Adjust the lighting in your workspace to reduce glare on your screen.
  • Blinking helps to moisten your eyes and prevent dryness.
  • Many devices have built-in blue light filters that can help reduce eye strain.

Why is wearing sunglasses important?

Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion statement; they’re also important for protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause cataracts, macular degeneration, and other eye problems. When choosing sunglasses, look for a pair that blocks 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.

How can a healthy diet improve your eye health?

Eating a healthy diet can help keep your eyes healthy. Foods rich in vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, and omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce the risk of age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts. Foods such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, eggs, nuts, and fatty fish are all great options for maintaining healthy eyes.
